Goldendoodle origin: how this crossbreed began and why
You might wonder when your goldendoodle's mixed heritage actually began. See the real story – guest starring your dog.
Monica Dickens bred goldendoodles in the 1960s as guide dogs for people with dog allergies. In the late 1990s, a few breeders began actively promoting the cross, aiming for a dog with a golden retriever's friendly nature and a coat that sheds little. If you own one today, you are living with the result of decades of experimentation.

Part 1
When and why the goldendoodle was first bred
In the 1960s, Monica Dickens bred goldendoodles to work as guide dogs for people who were allergic to dogs. Poodle crosses had already appeared occasionally over the centuries before that. The cross became a deliberate effort in the late 1990s, when a small group of breeders began promoting it. Their goal was a dog that kept the golden retriever's friendly temperament but carried a coat that sheds little or not at all. Breeders were also inspired by the labradoodle's earlier success in reaching dog owners with allergies.
If you have ever wondered why your dog seems to combine two very different looks, this is why. Breeders wanted a dog that was trainable, since both parent breeds are known for it, and versatile enough to suit many lifestyles.
Part 2
Who gets credit for the first crosses
Monica Dickens bred goldendoodles in the 1960s to provide guide dogs for people with dog allergies. She was the great-granddaughter of the novelist Charles Dickens. Decades later, Amy Lane is described as a trailblazer who set up one of the first dedicated goldendoodle breeding programs. In 2001 Lane crossed a golden retriever with a miniature poodle, and the first known miniature goldendoodle litter was born in January 2002. Judy Hahn, a 4-H leader and early labradoodle breeder in the United States, also helped shape the breed's early development.
You can see how different this is from the labradoodle's story. Wally Conron created the first labradoodle litter in 1989 while working as breeding manager for the Royal Guide Dogs Association of Australia, crossing a Labrador with a standard poodle to make a guide dog for a woman whose husband was allergic to dogs.
Part 3
How the doodle trend took off
The labradoodle's earlier success inspired goldendoodle breeders, who hoped a similar cross would appeal to dog owners with allergies. Breeders leaned on the appeal of a coat that could suit people with dog allergies. Goldendoodles gained popularity through the 1990s as a designer dog and kept rising through the 2000s. Owners noticed they tended to be calm and good with children. Amy Lane founded the Goldendoodle Association of North America in 2008 to bring the community together. The association built a database to record the pedigrees of foundation dogs.
Part 4
Is the goldendoodle a recognized breed
A goldendoodle is a crossbreed of the golden retriever and the poodle. In 2017 the association introduced its first breed standard for the goldendoodle. The organization also focuses on health testing and breeder guidelines for its members. If you are choosing a breeder, checking whether they follow standards like these can tell you a lot about how the dogs are raised.
Part 5
What the mix inherited from each parent breed
From the golden retriever side, goldendoodles tend to inherit a friendly, trainable temperament, which is part of why breeders wanted to keep that quality in the cross. From the poodle side, they get a coat that sheds less, along with trainability that both parent breeds share. Because both parent breeds are known for being easy to train, breeders expected the cross to be responsive and well behaved. Amy Lane crossed a golden retriever with a miniature poodle, producing the first known miniature goldendoodle litter.
